The PR6 is a proprietary scale that provides holistic measurement of resilience across six domains of resilience that has been developed by Pieter J. Rossouw and Jurie G. Rossouw using an established neurobiological model.
This week’s domain is Health.
What is Health?
Health is a foundation domain of resilience. Various studies have shown how much an impact your own physical health can have on your well-being, simply because it has such a strong effect on your experience of life when everything is not working as it should.
Chronic health issues can be the most difficult to deal with as they have an ongoing effect on our lives. We have some amount of control through the lifestyle we choose to lead and how proactively we invest in the health of both the body and brain.
The developers of the PR6 Assessment were inspired by the growing research linking health hygiene factors to mental well-being. These factors, include exercise frequency, adherence to healthy nutrition, and healthy sleeping patterns. These factors were not directly measured by any of the major resilience scales reviewed when the PR6 Assessment was created.
How does a low score present?
If your health domain is low then investing in your health is probably not high on your priority list either because things have been okay so far, or maybe other areas of your life are more important right now.
It is well known, and supported by research, that there are many aspects to a healthy lifestyle. These include regularly eating healthy foods (plenty of vegetables, minimal sugars and processed foods), exercising multiple times a week, and getting around eight hours of quality sleep each night. It is also important to moderate alcohol use, minimise the use of tobacco and so on. You likely know all this, but perhaps simply haven’t had the impetus to make a larger lifestyle change.
Again, if your health score is low, then your health is likely to be at a level where you get easily out of breath, feel lethargic or crave a sugar hit at 3pm. The key for you to develop and improve your resilience is to understand that quality sleep, exercise, and nutrition have long-term benefits for your brain, helping to maintain plasticity so that you can more easily adapt to changing circumstances. This will help you to be more successful when environments change, and keep you mentally sharp and active both now and in years to come. Investing in your health will also reduce the chance and severity of health issues you might suffer in the future.
